Supreme Court Orders Maharashtra Local Body Polls by January 31, Pulls Up State Election Commission
The Supreme Court has taken a tough stance on the long -term local body elections in Maharashtra. The court has directed the State Election Commission to conduct all local body elections by 31 January 2026. The court also reprimanded the Election Commission for delay.
A bench headed by the Chief Justice said that delay in democratic process cannot be tolerated under any circumstances. The court also clarified that none of the state government or the Election Commission can withdraw from the constitutional obligation.
The Supreme Court reminded the Commission that local body elections strengthen the roots of democracy. Not having timely election is a violation of the rights of the people and this raises questions on the system of governance.
Significantly, the tenure of many municipal corporations and city councils in Maharashtra has been completed, but elections have not been held yet. After the court order, the pressure on the Election Commission has increased to complete the process within the deadline.
