Spain’s Party Island Ibiza Also Suffers Housing Crunch as Rents Soar

Spain’s famous party island Ibiza, which is considered a center of attraction for its nightlife, beaches and tourists, is struggling with a serious crisis these days. Rents here are increasing so fast that it has become very difficult for local residents and workers to get cheap housing system.

Every year a large number of seasonal employees come to the island due to thousands of jobs related to the tourism industry. But rapidly growing rental and limited house availability have increased their difficulties. According to reports, many employees have to live in shared rooms or are being forced to leave the island due to high prices.

Local people say that the brunt of the beauty and popularity of IBISA is now repaying common citizens. The houses that were earlier available to families have now been converted into a holiday for tourists. Due to this change, fares have increased more than double.

The administration has tried to implement some rules in view of the increasing crisis, such as banning illegal holiday rentals and monitoring landlords. But local organizations say that these steps are not enough. They are afraid that if the situation remains the same, then in the coming time, Ibiza will remain only for the rich tourists and the local community will be marginalized.

The rental crisis is not limited to employees only. Many teachers, nurses and people working in essential services are also being affected. Experts believe that if the solution is not found immediately, the island’s economy and social fabric can have a serious impact.
