Australia’s Watered-Down Emissions Target Draws Ire of Environmentalists

The recently announced new emission targets by the Australian government have created deep resentment among environmentalists and climate activists. He says that this goal is so weak that it is neither in line with the terms of the Paris Agreement nor able to face the real challenge of the climate crisis.

The government argues that it has prepared a roadmap that is practical and financially balanced. According to officials, the scheme will ensure energy security and will not put heavy burden on industries. But environmental groups believe that this is just a formality, which will neither be a meaningful decrease in emissions nor will the country be able to move faster towards renewable energy.

Institutions like Climate Council and Greenpeace have clearly stated that a developed nation like Australia expects the world to take more concrete steps. According to critics, any kind of climate policy is not just more than just showing while continuing dependence on coal and gas exports.

In the last few years, Australia has faced problems such as horrific wildfire, rising sea levels and long droughts. Scientists say that if the government does not take strict steps, then this crisis can be more frightening in the coming decades.

On the other hand, some political leaders and business groups believe that gradually changes are the right path, so that the economy and employment are not suddenly affected. But environmental workers say that now the time is less left and the “slow” thinking will not help stop the climate disaster.
