Hungary’s LGBTQ+ Community Reels Under Orban’s New Laws, Pride Ban

The recently implemented new laws by the government of Prime Minister Victor Orban in Hungary has put the LGBTQ community in deep concern and insecurity. Under these laws, public events and related events have been banned publicly. In addition, strictnesses such as ban on discussing LGBTQ issues in educational and cultural programs have also been implemented.

This step is a major setback for the community fighting for equality and freedom of expression. LGBTQ activists in Hungary say that these laws not only violate their constitutional rights, but also endanger their existence. Many people have called it “unprecedented repression”.

Over the years, the Orban Sarkar has presented itself as a “protector of traditional values” and has adopted strict policies about the family structure. Critics say that these laws are against democratic principles and human rights of the European Union (EU). Expressing concern over this, EU has also sought answers from Hungary, but no concrete solution has been revealed so far.

This ban has had a direct impact on thousands of people who used to celebrate their identity and freedom by participating in Budapest Pride March every year. The organizers say that Pride is not just a celebration but a symbol of demand for equal rights and respect. With its stop, the LGBTQ community will reach even more marginalized.

There is also a deep gorge on this issue within the society. While on the one hand, supporters consider it to be the means of “culture and protecting children”, on the other hand human rights activists and opposition parties are calling it “attack on democracy and freedom”.

The situation is that many youths are now thinking of leaving Hungary to such countries where they get freedom to live openly. Experts believe that if this policies continue, Hungary may have to suffer loss not only at the social but also at the economic level.
